*****THIS BOX WAS FOUND OPEN AND EMPTY. I WILL HAVE TO RE-CARVE AND REPLACE IN A MORE DISCREET LOCATION.*****

In doing letterbox searches, I noticed that there are very few boxes in Montgomery Co. so in searching for good places, came across Shuttleworth Park in Amsterdam. Being interested in the origins of names of places I did a bit of research before placing the box and found the information below. If it interests you, read it, otherwise just skip on down to the clue.

“Herbert L. Shuttleworth, youngest of the sons of William and Rachel (Wilson) Shuttleworth, was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1861. Like his brothers, after receiving a good education, he was taught the weaver's trade and trained to
the business of manufacturing. He has been connected with the Amsterdam mills since the beginning, and when the incorporation was effected he became junior member of Shuttleworth Brothers & Company. ”

Mohawk Rugs
“Mohawk rugs and carpets had their beginning in 1878 when four industrious Shuttleworth brothers, in joint a joint venture, brought 14 second hand looms from England to Amsterdam, New York. They sweated, persevered, prospered, and in 1902 incorporated as the Shuttleworth Brothers Company.

Mohawk rugs would eventually emerge as a result of a convenient merger of two aggressive and similar companies. It began in 1886, in another section of the city, where four experienced carpetmen pooled their resources to form a carpet-making venture of their own named McCleary, Wallin and Crouse. ..... In 1920, the two firms, Shuttleworth Brothers Company and McCleary, Wallin and Crouse, merged to form this very company. They became the only textile mill in the United States to produce all domestic weaves of carpet: Wilton, Axminster, Velvet and Chenille.”

Directions:
From Route 30, after Price Chopper, turn onto Miami Ave. to drive between Wal-Mart and Home Depot. At the T, turn right onto Midline. (You can take the next left to go down Pioneer and then right into the park.) Or, stay left at the Y and turn left at the next stop sign onto Cresent. At the T turn left to go into the park. Look for parking signs for Shuttleworth Park. You can mapquest the park’s name, Herbert L. Shuttleworth Park, Amsterdam, NY, and you’ll get a detailed map.

Mohawk in the Park Clue:
Ink pad is included but you may want to bring your markers to stamp with.

Park in the parking lot near the playground so that you are between the baseball field and playground. Face the big diamond and count the letters that stand out blue against the sky. Find when the park is open and walk to that. With your back to Davey, walk 40 degrees to a place of burning coals. From the SSW corner of this place take “letters” steps to a former shade source. Go north to another of the same and stand in the center. Continue north past another fireplace and to the right of the 2 big pines. Find the path and follow it to the blue dot. On the other side of the dot, below some leaves and a small root, is your Indian.

Please rehide well. This can be a busy park.
