LOTR Trilogy

Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them.

Your quest, should you choose to accept this difficult burden, it to find three of the icons from the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Access the starting point of your quest at the Pikes Peak Greenway/New Santa Fe Trail trailhead. From 1-25, take the Woodmen Road exit (149) going west. Pass through the unblinking eye (it may be red, yellow, or green) at the Corporate Dr/Commerce Center Rd intersection. Turn right into the parking area, marked with the Edmondson Trailhead sign. Park here. Begin your quest walking (or biking) north.

Use extreme stealth when accessing these boxes—this is a very busy trail, with high numbers of orcs & Uruk-hai marching, running, or riding strange contraptions along it. They will also no doubt be accompanied by hairy animals who run on four legs. Expect even greater numbers of these creatures after work hours and on weekends. With the exception of the first box, you will probably need to move away from the hiding spot to claim the icons.

STING
An Elvish knife, STING was used as a sword by Bilbo, who found it in a troll-hoard. He gave it to Frodo just before the Fellowship of the Ring set off from Rivendell. It has the ability to detect the presence of Orcs, which causes the weapon to glow blue. To find STING, head down the hill and walk for about .25 mi. You'll pass by Hell's Gate (you'll know it when you see it) and head back uphill. Spot a medium-sized Ponderosa pine tree just off the trail on the right. Just before the tree (also on the right-hand side) is a social trail heading SE. Take this path down the hill for approximately 55 paces (1 pace for every step). Look almost due north up a small hill, and spot 2 large pine trees behind a large clump of scrub oak. Head towards these trees. Once at the 2 trees (the first tree is multitrunked, the eastern tree's trunk is split), go around them to the east and look for another large pine tree about 20 yards away overlooking the creek. It has many branches on its lower trunk. On the northern side of this tree, you'll find STING, covered by pine needles and a big rock.

ELVEN BROOCH
The leaf brooch was worn by the members of the Fellowship, and symbolizes the spirit and bond of those entrusted to save Middle-Earth. To find this icon, make your way back to the main trail at the Ponderosa pine tree. Continue north on the trail for almost .2 mile. Look for low rock walls on both sides of the trail. There is a pine tree on the right side of the trail, above the rock wall. Search behind this tree on the eastern side for the ELVEN BROOCH, also hidden under a rock and pine needles.

THE ONE RING
The One Ring was created by the Dark Lord Sauron in order to gain dominion over the free peoples of Middle-earth. He intended it to be the most powerful of all Rings, able to rule and control the others. For this last and ultimate icon, return to the main trail and again head north for almost .5 mi. Spot a large rock on the left side of the trail with a plaque and a railroad spike in it. Read about the junction of the Pikes Peak Greenway and the New Snata Fe Trail if you wish. From this rock, count 24 paces north on the trail. See another low rock wall on the left. Look west about 10' uphill away from the rock wall for a pine tree (are you seeing a pattern here?) with a westerly long, low branch that curves down and touches the ground. On the west side of this pine tree you will find THE ONE RING, under a rock and pine needles. Claim it, but beware its power!

Please re-cover all boxes well, and make sure there is no one around when finding/replacing the boxes. Watch out for prickly things and crawly things. Special thanks to COdogscout for assisting me in the placing of these boxes. Don't forget to log your finds!
