This quaint red brick one-room schoolhouse, located on Potter Road, near the intersection with Green Corners Road Extension, is the oldest known unaltered one-room schoolhouse in the Town of Glenville.

How old is the school? The deed shows that purchase of the land was made in 1823. The last class held here was in 1946.

The entrance to the school appears to have a Palladian window over it, with windows on each side, which have been bricked in. No records have been found to confirm this.

Many initials and dates have been carved in the soft brick outside the school, some of which date back to 1866.

The stone fence still surrounds the school grounds.

Grades one through eight were taught here. One year there were 35 students attending this small 20’ x 24’ school.

Original Items: Some of the items in the school were here at the time the school closed or were saved from previous times, such as the teacher’s desk, a glass inkwell, the recitation bench, the wooden blackboard, the stove and stovepipe, the map case, some of the library books, the last teacher’s register, and the school bell (found in a nearby field).

Directions:
Use mapquest.com and search for 2200 Potter Rd., Amsterdam, NY 12010. (The school house is in W. Glenville but the mailing address is Amsterdam.)

The school house is near the corner of Greens Corner Rd and Touareuna Rd. If you take Route 5 west from Scotia you will go 4.8 miles from the intersection of Rt. 5 and 890. Turn right onto Wolf Hollow Rd and follow that up the hill, past the intersection with West Glenville Rd, 1.5 miles to the intersection with Potter. Turn right onto Potter and the school house will be the second building on your left.

If you come from Route 147, turn onto North Road, take the first right onto Potter, go 2 miles and the school house will be on your right.

Clue:

Look at the brick carvings on the front of the schoolhouse. Find CJ’s and note the year. Start at the southeast corner of the schoolhouse and walk along the east side of the school to the solid rock. (CJ times 10 degrees) + 6 paces. Walk 120 degrees to a leafy three-some. A primitive gate to the woods is your next stop. From there, 5 paces at 80 degrees will take you to a rainbow against a tree. Under some rocks will be your prize.

Ink pad is included. Please, as always, re-hide carefully and well.

In the box are also clues to a bonus box which is located inside the school house. In order to get the bonus box you will need to visit the school house during July and August on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 – 4 pm when it will be open and attended by a guide. Early June through the end of September you may email me at cabinclan@nycap.rr.com to arrange for me to open the school house for you.
