This letterbox is located in Arthur W. Butler Sanctuary. To get to Butler Sanctuary from 684, get off at exit 4 (Bedford/Mt. Kisco) and take 172 towards Mt. Kisco. Make your first left onto Chestnut Ridge Rd. After a few miles make a right at the Arthur W. Butler Sanctuary sign. Follow to sanctuary parking.

Follow the trail to the registration kiosk and look at the map. There often are not trail maps available, but the route is easy. Look carefully at the route via the red trail to the Sunset Rock Overlook. The hike to the letterbox is a little over 1 mile- with some hills but quite kid-friendly.

Follow the red trail. Pass intersections with orange trail, blue trail, white trail... eventually you will see the the orange trail split off to your right (it also did this way back at the beginning). Just after that you'll go on a section of trail lined with stepping stones to help when it is muddy. Shortly after that you'll see a white trail fork off to the left (you will have passed white trails twice before). Turn left onto the white trail. There will soon be a vine hanging on the left of the trail that makes a great swing. If you have kids with you, they'll love it! Continue along the white trail until it ends at the top of a small rise. As you enter the clearing there, you will see a long, very dead tree with branches sticking up. Follow it to what remains of its roots. In front of you will be a long, flat rock. Walk to your left on the flat rock to the end. In front of you will be a boulder (about 3ft x 3ft) that is tilted. The Sneaky Sunset Rock box is under the boulder.

We recommend retrieving the box and sitting on one of the many large rocks in this clearing to stamp and picnic. It is a very peaceful spot! Please return the box to it's proper hiding place when done.

I hiked here alot 6 or 7 years ago and Sunset Rock Overlook used to have a clear view into the valley below- where there was a mansion that was owned for a while by Mariah Carey. That house has since burned down and a new one been built... but we were so suprised to see that the trees have grown taller and almost completely block the view! My daughter dubbed it very sneaky- thus the name! In the fall the view might be better, but we still enjoy this quiet spot for a snack, relaxing, and rock-hopping.
