Hill County, home to 35,157 residents and comprised of 657,452 acres of land, is located in the Central Texas Blacklands, approximately 60 miles south of the cities of Dallas and Fort Worth. The first settlers of Hill County were attracted to its rolling prarie land because of the rich soil and abundance of timber and artesian wells. With the arrival of the MKT railroad, Hillsboro became a commericial cross- roads for Texas and by the turn of the century, Hill County was the second largest cotton producer in the state.
Agriculture still remains the leading industry today, with agricultural commodities sales averaging about $70,000,000 annually. Average yields for wheat, cotton, corn and grain sorghum are 40 bushels, 375 pounds, 70 bushels, and 4000 pounds, respectively. Other than agriculture, Hill County is economically driven by light industry and retail outlets.

To the letterbox:

Howdy Partners! To find Farmer Bill hitch up your wagon and pull out from the Hill County Courhouse and head East on Franklin Street. Steer your team a few blocks, then turn 'em left onto Pleasant Street. There's a couple of ways to git where your goin', but I'd just mosey a few more blocks then head my wagon to the right on Corsicana Street. The next part's a little tricky, but if you're from the country you know that street signs are hard to come by. Just a few blocks down Corsicana Street on the left is a road with no sign. If you turn your team left on that road it won't be long 'til you see the Hillsboro City Park. I'd pull in there and unhitch the team where the trail dead ends. About a skip and a jump in front of ya is a concrete path that leads up to the Sesquicentennial Musical Park. Walk up that path and take a seat on the far left bench in front of the stage. There might be some entertainment going on, you never know. If you take a glance to the North East corner of the stage, you'll see a large shrub. Farmer Bill is waiting for ya at the base of the shrub covered by mulch. Rehide and cover well. Thank ya, and have a nice day!
