ZUKO’S ESCAPE
(As told by Zuni)

Great! There goes my little brother, Zuko, running away from me! It’s all my fault. I should have known that he just wouldn’t be able to resist running off. I brought him here to the Rotary Gateway Park to relax and look at the river. He ran down the bike path under the bridge….guess I better get him. Mom and Dad sure won’t be happy if I lose him!

As I begin my journey I am immediately consumed with the delicious smells coming from the tavern up ahead. I run along under the bridge, following the river. On the other side the smells are even greater and I am tempted to stop for a bite. Being the larger of us two, I need to eat! Ahhh, but Mom and Dad wouldn’t understand so I continue my journey. The path takes me now across a small bridge and into the woods. The trail has changed since our last visit; it used to be graveled with lots of rocks to play with, now it is paved. I soon come to a small intersection with a large sign showing me where I am on the Paint Creek Trail. I turn left and enter the Rochester Municipal Park – I’m sure Zuko is in here somewhere!

As I run along the path I notice a strange looking pirate ship on my right, stranded without water. Then I see a dinosaur! Although I think he might enjoy these things, I doubt Zuko is there. I follow the path to the left and cross yet another bridge. On the other side the path goes left and right. It looks as though they each circle the pond here so I go right and follow the river. Looking at the pond I am lucky enough to see some ducks! Hmm…that would be a tasty lunch! Okay, okay, focus. As I travel down this path I count three benches on my right. I stop at the third bench and rest in the shade. After resting, I continue down the path and come to a small sign that reads “Please DO NOT FEED Waterfowl and other Wildlife in and around the pond.” But it doesn’t say I can’t feed ON the waterfowl, hehe.

Up ahead the fork in the path is very complicated. I decide to stick to the main path and continue straight on my way. As I round the curve, I see the biggest dragonfly I’ve ever seen on my left! I’m a little scared now so I run down the path towards the shade. The trail splits off to the left again but I am so interested in the trees on the right that I never turn. There are several trees with white ovals on them. It is an “Honorary Forest” I name it, and continue on.

Now I come to another complicated fork in the road. I turn and cross the bridge. On the other side the trail splits again. This time, one remains paved and the other gravel, but it looks as though they take me to the same place. As I trot along in the shade, I notice all of these trees have something in common. It looks as though this is a “Forest of Love” since most of the trees grow as two. Up ahead, the trail forks again, but this fork leads outside of the park, and I think Zuko is still in the park. I continue along past a couple buildings on the left and come to another possible route. I decide to follow the river. I see a big rock on my left as the trail slowly dips down.

Down and around the trail I see a bridge on the right, but this time I do not cross it. On the other side is a small waterfall and I thought about getting a drink but it’s too risky. So I press on. Zuko must be here somewhere! After about sixty-five steps I see to my right a nice trail leading down towards the water. Here is where I shall get a drink! I start down the trail and see a small trail going to the right. But what is this? Here is Zuko, tucked behind the tree sound asleep!

Please be careful when retrieving the box and re-hiding the box. The location is fairly well hidden but you could be seen. After you are done, turn right on to the trail and follow it to the pavilion with all the picnic tables. From there you will see the path to take you back to your car.
