Rip Van Winkle is a story by the American author Washington Irving published in 1819, as well as the name of the story's fictional protagonist. The story is set in the years before and after the American Revolutionary War in a nice village at the foot of New York's Catskill Mountains. It describes what happens after Rip Van Winkle awakens from a twenty year slumber and attempts to understand his new world. You can find this box at Tannersville Lake, otherwise known as Rip Van Winkle Lake. It's a great place for relaxation, but take a nap at your own risk.
Directions:
From Rt 23A in Tannersville, turn west on S. Main Street, then left on Lake Road to Rip Van Winkle Lake. Park by the beach.
Clues:
From the beach facing the lake, walk right on the dirt road and across the bridge to the first path on the right. Turn right and go 95 steps to where another path joins it from the left. Continue another 70 steps, passing picnic tables on the left, to where the trail bends left. Walk left to a multi-trunk birch tree 8 steps off trail, then 6 more steps behind it to another multi-trunk birch tree. The camo letterbox is within trunks under a rock and leaves. Please re-cover well. NOTE: It has been reported that picnic tables are no longer there, but steps should be correct.
