The "Miracle on Ice" refers to the men's ice hockey game in the 1980 Olympic Winter Games at Lake Placid, in which a team of amateur and collegiate players from the United States beat the long-dominant and heavily-favored Soviet Union in the semi-final game. Sportscaster Al Michaels, who was calling the game on ABC, picked up on the countdown in his broadcast, and delivered his famous call: “ ...Eleven seconds, you've got ten seconds, the countdown going on right now! Morrow, up to Silk...five seconds left in the game...Do you believe in miracles? YES!!! ” The United States had to win one more game, against Finland, to get the gold medal, and it generated huge patriotic pride. It was a moment I'll never forget, and while visiting Lake Placid I just had to leave a box dedicated to this great achievement. You can find it at the Peninsula Nature Trails, which are easy walks in the woods along the outlet end of Lake Placid. You can get a map at the Visitor Center in Lake Placid. Even though it is quiet and peaceful, if you listen real hard, you still might hear chants of "USA, USA, USA"!

Directions:
From Saranac Avenue (Route 86) turn north onto Peninsula Road which starts between Comfort Inn and the Howard Johnson Restaurant. You can also access the road from the Comfort Inn parking area. Follow the road about .4 mile to a small parking area at a gate on the left.

Clues:
Walk north through the gate along the dirt road for about .4 mile, crossing the Boundary trail after a few yards, where you will find a large clearing from which several trails radiate. Continue on the road a few more yards and turn left toward the Lakeshore Trail. When you get to the lake, turn right and walk about 100 yards just past marker post 'C' to a wood bench on the left by the lake. With your back to the bench and lake, walk south directly behind it 25 steps to two large trees growing next to each other. Continue another 4 steps to a small pine tree. The camo microbox is hanging on the back side about 6 feet high. Please replace as described. You can continue on the Lakeshore Trail about .4 mile where it will rejoin the dirt road about .3 mile further than you left it, turning right to head back to your car.
