Moments to Celebrate

"To an extinct race it was grass-ground, where they hunted and fished, and it is still perennial grass-ground to Concord farmers, who own the Great Meadows, and get the hay from year to year" -Thoreau

Every month, thousands visit Old North Bridge in Minuteman National Historic Park. Just a bit down the Concord River however, is a quiet, bird-filled, aquatic oasis. It is here you will find a letterbox. It is located within the GREAT MEADOWS NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE (Concord). The parking is tucked away in a residential neighborhood, so you will be tested a bit just in finding that. For extra credit, you can enter the refuge via an old railroad bed, the Concord River, or the back way from the Old North Bridge parking lot (private). You will know you are in the right place when you can see an OBSERVATION TOWER.

While exploring the network of paths within the refuge, you may come upon small signs seeking to inform you about the local flora and fauna. One of these signs speaks of a playful RIVER creature. As you stand before this sign, looking directly east, see if you can spot a BROKEN TREE TRUNK suspended horizontally perhaps fifty yards away. Do not fret about seeing it. It may be obscured by foliage, or perhaps has finished falling (update 3/20/03 - It has finished falling!). What has drawn you here can be found tucked away in the BASE of the still vertical portion.

While a bushwhack might be feasible, try taking the small path leading off to your left. Turn right at the water's edge. Picking your way along the shore, turn at the fallen giant and follow him out to the first-mentioned tree. It grows from a rather odd conglomeration of shared rootings for perhaps six main trunks. I hope you have fun poking around while you locate your prize.

Please be cautious seeking this box in times of high water (update 3/20/03 - boots required). Never enter MOVING water, and be sure to read the disclaimer.
