That’s San Pablo Bay and diaphones are the technical term for foghorns. This letterbox is located in a spot which will give you a fine view of the East Brother Light Station, West Brother Island, Mount Tamalpais and the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. You will be driving and following signs as though you’re going to the Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor, only you’re not going quite that far. For one reason it’s private and not particularly welcoming, for another you can’t see the East Brother Light Station from there (which is the subject of this letterbox) and for a third reason, the Diaphones on the Bay Letterbox is not at the Yacht Harbor.

From Marin...Take the exit toward RICHMOND PKWY / PT RICHMOND, keep RIGHT at the fork in the ramp, merge onto Castro Street, cross under freeway, then take right on-ramp for I-580 West, heading back toward the bridge. Just before the toll plaza, take the Point Molate exit (right). Follow signs to Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor. Do not go all the way to the harbor.

From East Bay...From Interstate 80 (either direction), take San Rafael exit to Interstate 580 West toward Richmond-San Rafael Bridge. Just before toll plaza, take Point Molate exit. Follow signs to Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor, only don’t go all the way to the Yacht Harbor.

After an interesting drive of several miles on the main road, park when you reach a particular fork in the road. You will know you are at the correct fork because on the right will be a steep and narrow rutted road which reads No Through Street. You will also see a larger 4’ x 6’ sign which reads Point San Pablo Yacht Harbor with a skull and crossbones on the top left side.

After you’ve parked walk to the south, bay side of the road where you will note large metal posts every four or five feet supporting a low fence/barrier. Walk to the end of the posts where is a large white semi-portable wall. Count 26 of these yellow posts going SE. From here due west you’ll have a great view of East Brother Light Station. Look down and to the bay side to see part of the ruined railroad track. Under the lip closest to post 26 and also under a medium sized chunk of cement you will find the Diaphones on the Bay Letterbox.

Thanks for coming.
