At the starting point of downtown, head west outside of town on Lakeshore Drive/M185 until you reach address 2796. From here you will want to walk up the wood chip road. Take a right at the fire hydrant and travel up steep gravel road until the road becomes paved. Turn right at first fire hydrant towards Stonecliff & Oakwood Manor. Be on the lookout for a trail marker that indicates "sunset rock". Follow this narrow foot path and continue on by taking the second right foot path to sunset rock.

This is the island's best kept secret which was obtained by the Mackinac Island State Park in July 2002 for a purchase price of $600,000. This popular rock formation has historically been favored for its stunning views of Lake Huron and the Mackinac Bridge. After enjoying the view, travel down the steps approximately 40 yards in an easterly direction and look for a hillock. Near the base of a large fallen spruce tree nestled amongst the cedars the letterbox can be revealed.

While up on the bluff, you may want to visit Stonecliff Inn which was built in 1904 on 150 acres by Michael Cudahy. Michael Cudahy established the practice of moving meat on refrigerated wagons, a novel idea that transformed the business from seasonal to year-round. He ended his days as a multi-millioniare with a stately home in Chicago and his mansion on Mackinac Island. Stonecliff has been bought and sold several times since and was recently revived to its present condition after years of neglect. Also located nearby is the Woods restaurant owned & operated by the Grand Hotel.
