This box is alive and well as of 9-13-07.

This box was originally used at an informational table at Gillette’s Castle for National Trails Day 2007 for the CT Forest and Park Association.
You may now find this box in Middlefield, Ct.

This is not a hike for small children as you are near the edge of the cliffs and can be a bit strenuous in places. Caution should be used in the winter as the trail can become very slippery. This is copperhead habitat so be careful when reaching into the box’s hiding area.
There is no ink pad in the box, you might want to use colored ink markers.

Directions to the box are as follows:

From the West take Route 691 East. Take a right onto the Preston Avenue Exit. At the end of exit take a right and at first light take a left onto East Main Street. Continue on East Main Street until you see the sign for Black Pond.
From the East take Route 66 towards Meriden. Take the East Main Street Meriden Exit. This will be a left side exit. Once on the exit you will need to take a very sharp left directly after the overpass. You will see the sign for Black Pond. Continue down road to parking area.

From the parking lot at Black Pond in Middlefield follow the Blue Trail South up the hill. Continue on the blue blazed trail until you come to a grassy opening with a small juniper on the right and a larger juniper on the left. You will be almost at the end of Black Pond. As you look out across the pond you will be across from a shopping center and a motel. These will be at about 300 degrees from where you are standing. From route 66 on your right you will count 4 power line poles. If you are at the correct outlook the fourth pole will be at about 260. The powerlines were actually moved after this box was planted so you will be standing pretty much between three and four. That's one of the things you would never think would change.
If you are at the correct opening, turn around and you will see a snag (actually I was just informed on 11/26/07 that the snag is now a fallen snag) behind one small cedar at about 120 degrees. Look behind the trapdoor on the backside of the (fallen) snag.
To grab a couple more boxes continue on the blue trail for Gifford and Four Directional Bear Letterboxes.
