This box was placed to commemorate a birthday.
The box can be found on the Penstock Trail, formerly a huge waterpipe used to deliver water to a powerhouse located where the parking lot is now. The electricity powered engines which pulled trains through the Cascade Tunnel at Stevens Pass. It parallels the Wenatchee River as it tumbles through Tumwater Canyon. NOTE: This trail is sometimes flooded in the spring due to the high volume of water in the river. We think the box will stay "high and dry."
There are a number of hidden river beaches along the way for wading or relaxing. BEWARE OF THE STRONG AND UNPREDICTABLE CURRENT IN SEEMINGLY CALM, BUT DEEP WATERS.
Summer is a great time to view Osprey (sp?) fishing the river (a giant nest is visible from the trail) and climbers on "Castle Rock" across the river.
Round Trip Mileage: Whole trail-2 miles (allow about 1 hour total)To the box and back-1.5 miles.
Suitable for: Kids/dogs OK, easy mostly flat trail. Tennies are a good choice for shoes.
Open: Late Spring-Late Fall
No Permit Needed
Driving Directions:
From Leavenworth, start your odometer after you pass the gas station at the corner of Icicle Road and Highway 2 West. Drive 1.7 miles west on Hwy 2. Turn left at a non-descript parking area next to the river (if you pass by an old bridge over the river on your left, you've gone too far).
Clues: From the parking area, the trail begins just beyond the outhouse and continues over an old half pipe shaped bridge.
Over the bridge, through the woods
By the well traveled left paths you go
After the rockslide with the 'lil creek
You're halfway there you know
Soon, on the right, 2 memorial crosses you'll see
50 steps further, (45 if you're tall)
Just after old metal scraps there will be
A big boulder on the left, one step up is all.
Step up on the ledge, you're almost done
Look at the base of this giant "spear"
Under some smaller rocks,(check for snakes)
You've found the box right here!
