This box is in Reifsnider State Forest, off Highway M between Warrenton and Wright City

Past the entrance and down the hill
Will take you to a channel and rill.

If the water is high
Don’t give it a try!

Across the creek is the place to park
Put on your bug spray before you embark.

Lizard Rock trail is the path for your quest.
Leave it cleaner than found, for you are it’s guest.

The name of the trail is not surely clear,
Though Five-lined Skinks are sure to be near.

If you’ve never seen one, their tails are bright blue.
But only when young do they have such a hue.

Poison Ivy runs alongside this trail,
Make sure you know it or later you’ll wail!

Walk along ‘til you come to the creek.
Keep following as it turns slightly oblique.

‘Til directly across is a great sycamore
Hanging on by its roots from the opposite shore.

Turn your back to that marvel of gravity spurned
Then think back to grade-school math that you learned.

Plenty of rocks to be fun for the lizards
To bask in the sun or hide during blizzards.

Two of the rocks form a Less Than sign.
Where lizard eyes would be level with thine.

If poison ivy is blocking in front
Put a rock on to push it so that you can hunt.

At the point of the Less Than and just a bit under
Covered with small stone is your lizard plunder.

Please seal and rehide it when no one is peeking,
So others can have just as much fun when seeking.
When you get home, log your find on the ‘net
I hope it’s a box you will never forget!

(This box is listed on both letterboxing.org and atlasquest.com.)

If you wish to walk farther, the remainder of the trail is not quite as wide and clear (or it wasn’t when the box was planted.) It is probably about 2 miles total once you get back to your car. Walk up the creek a bit. Notice that the bottom is solid rock! Then where a feeder creek joins this one, a 2nd shelf of rock starts. Follow that until almost where the 2nd shelf ends at small river rock and look to the right. The trail continues into the woods on the opposite bank. You’ll know you’re in the right place when you come to a nature trail sign. When you arrive at a fork in the trail, take the right path up the hill, then down the hill, then across the creek to the west bank. At this point, the trail is harder to find, but you can do it. Then it will come down the creek again. Go down the creek bed a bit and then the trail will continue on the left side (look for a trail sign on the tree if you’re not sure) and close the loop where you originally forked. Fork right and you’ll be heading back the way you came. If you have trouble with any of the trails, just follow the creek back to your car.
