Welcome to our very first Letterbox.

We are always in search of places around the Harrisburg area to hike and mountain bike. When we only have a short period of time we head to the “Greenbelt”. This is a 20 mile or so recreational path that circles our city. There are few interesting spots along the way.
One such place is the many abandoned buildings on the 200 acre campus of the Harrisburg State Lunatic Hospital. This hospital was built in 1845. It was closed in January, 2006.

Here are the clues to our box....

Take the street across from the Main Entrance of Farm Show Complex (
This is Azalea Drive.
Make a R onto South Circle Drive.
Turn R at “yellow crossing” sign and “Greenbelt” sign.
Park near Building 04.
Walk back out to the stop sign at crosswalk.
Cross and proceed through the orange gate.

Walk until you reach a wooden and concrete bridge.
Spot 2 street lights on your left. Walk to second street light and cross Sycamore Drive.
Walk to the next street light.
Facing 90 degrees walk to building #35
THIS IS THE MORGUE!

Standing on the porch at the front door knock two times.
Wait!!
Turn & Face forward then find 160 degrees.
Walk to the Magnolia tree with it’s twisted truck and tumors.(circ. 175)
Look back at building #35.

What you seek is 12 feet behind your ONE WAY out.
Hidden behind a tree-under some branches-wrapped in camo.

The Harrisburg State Hospital was used for the 1999 Psychological Thriller "Girl, Interrruped" starring Winona Ryder. 75% of building #22 was used as well as the admin. building, campus grounds and the miles of underground tunnels.

Please be discreet- leave no trace-and replace where and how found. There is a nice bench by the Magnolia.
Watch for snakes, spiders and poison ivy.

We hope you enjoyed your adventure. Look for more from us soon.

Please read the waiver before you agree to take on this adventure.
