THIS BOX IS TEMPORARILY REMOVED. WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REPLACE IT UNTIL SPRING 2011, AND WILL UPDATE THESE CLUES WHEN IT'S AGAIN IN PLACE.
We placed two letterboxes in Cascadia State Park. "4 and 20 Blackbirds" is shorter and easier to find. (You may want to find that box first. It contains an ink pad, and "Soda Creek Falls" DOES NOT, so you may need to borrow it if you didn't bring one along. But promise me YOU'LL RETURN IT to the "4 and 20 Blackbirds" box when you're done.) The 3/4 mile (one way) trail to this waterfall is well maintained and the waterfall waiting for you at the end seems reward enough for the effort. In case you need to know, the hike was very much within the abilities of this adventurous, but out-of-shape, middle-aged woman. A bit tiring, perhaps, but possible. The trail begins climbing about halfway to the falls, and retrieving the letterbox will require a significant scramble uphill about 30 feet, with rock and root holds to help. Go enjoy the waterfall and bring along any healthy 10 year old for the final ascent!

You need to find the trailhead sign for Soda Creek Falls. Be sure you don't confuse this with the Soda Springs Trail. That's also a nice hike, but not where you'll find this letterbox! Stay on the main trail, and it will lead you directly to the waterfall. Enjoy the scene, take some pictures, then head for the box. You'll find two large boulders directly opposite the waterfall, on the hill next to the trail. The upper boulder is a rather flat rock covered with moss. The box is hidden at the base of this rock, facing the waterfall, under a large chunk of rotting wood and a two foot long stone. This box has a double-sided stamp, one horizontal and one vertical. HELPFUL HINT: There is some semblance of a trail to the right of these boulders. I was able to make it to the top, using rock and root holds, despite pouring down rain. Please be careful.

We'd love to hear from you when you've found our box. Please "Contact the Placer".
