The MN State Fish normally prefers moderately deep lakes with gravel, rock or sandy bottoms. It is found primarily in cold water lakes. It can also be found in rivers, including the one that flows through this park, but probably not in the exciting rocky areas that you’ll see on your hike. Each year, anglers in Minnesota catch roughly 3.5 million of this fish, totaling 4 million pounds. The average state fish caught and kept is about 14 inches long and weighs slightly more than 1 pound. The state record is 35.8 inches long and 17.5 pounds.

To start your journey to “catch” this fish, start at the Visitor’s Center and find the path to the Swinging Bridge. After crossing the bridge, take the path at a bearing of 190 degrees. At the next intersection take the left fork, then right at the next on the “seasonal” trail. At the next intersection take a left at the trail that mentions a fish habitat. At the next post head left again along the ridge. After walking quite a while you will come to another intersection. Stand at the trail sign, then head due north to a 7-sister tree (some girls are thin, some are stout). The state fish is nestled along a log near the base of the tree.

A brown pencil & sharpener are included in the box so you can use it to enhance your image. Please reseal, replace and rehide everything carefully so this box is available for future visitors.

After stamping in, continue downhill with “caution”. At the next sign, head left and enjoy the sights and sounds along the way. Eventually you will return to the bridge where you can once again cross the river and then return to your vehicle.

Since we don’t live in the area, status reports would be greatly appreciated!
