Go south about 10 miles out of Hiawasse on S.R. 75/17 as if you are going to Helen. Just after you pass S.R. 180 and start to climb up to Unicoi Pass there is a brown sign directing you to the High Shoals Falls Recreation Area on an unpaved forest service road. Take that road, cross a small ford over a stream and go about 1.5 miles up to the parking area with two trash cans. Park and walk 1.2 miles down to the Falls. There are two main falls. The top one is the Blue Hole and the lower one is High Shoals Falls. The lower observation platform is shaped like a fat "T." The box is on top of the first cement support post on the right as you look at the platform from the trail. There is an arrow carved into the wood of the rail above the post. The box is between the wood of the walkway and the cement. It's hard to see, you have to squat down and reach up unto the top of the post. These Falls are great. Easter time is for the mountain laurel blooms, early July is for wild rhododendron, fall is for the changing leaves and wild mushrooms, winter is for the ice shapes in the falls. Enjoy!
