Half Moon State Park

Between Fair Haven and Rutland on Rt. 4, take Exit 4. Go North on Rt. 30 for 6 1/2 miles, left on Hortonia road for 2 miles and left on Black Pond road for 2 miles.

Let's get started!
When you first enter the park check in at the Ranger Station. You may park here. From the Ranger station go down to bottom of paved hill. Take a right at the signs that say Cabins. Follow pavement for 1/2 mi. You will begin to see cabins on either side of the road. Just before Cabin A (Dragonfly) notice the sign for the Nature Trail. Follow this. At the Glen Lake Trail sign bear left Go past a log with seats cut into it. Follow blue trail markings. This is a well maintained hiking trail. Cross two wooden bridges - take time to listen to water falling of the rocks here - very peaceful. Continue on trail for approx. 60 steps ahead. You will be on the water's edge of Half Moon Pond. You may see a turtle sunbathing on a water logged tree.......... Bear right on the trail (blue) and keep your eyes on the water. You may see a beaver swimming by or maybe a newly chewed tree. There is a beaver lodge ahead. Turn around here with your back to the water/beaver lodge and face a rock ledge. At 11 o'clock position from here, begin to climb up this bank (careful, kind of steep)to see a lichen covered stump on top of rock. Look below in the base of the rock to find the letter box.
When you have found the box, continue on the blue Nature Trail until you reach the campgrounds. Follow the pavement again back up to the Ranger station. Happy Hunting!
