This box was placed at Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden, CT. It's the first in a series remembering the Topps collectors card series, Wacky Packages. This is a short easy walk, except when the trail is coated with melting ice and you're being dragged along by 2 dogs, but a quick one to pick up if you're in the area.

For those of you who don't remember, these were die cuts and stickers marketed to children in the 70's poking fun with parody at product advertising.

Directions: Take Exit 10 off I-91, this is a Long exit ramp (~2 miles). At the end, turn Right on to Whitney Ave (rte 10), & go for a couple of miles, passing through the Mt. Carmel section of Hamden. Then you might want to stop & pick up a Park map first at the main entrance to Sleeping Giant off Mt. Carmel Ave (Traffic light & sign for Quinnipiac College to your Right). Just be aware that you will be charged a State Park fee ($5) on weekends, May through October (?), & everyday during the week in the Summer if you park inside the gate, many people (fishermen in particular) park along side the road for free. Continue on Whitney Ave beyond the main Sleeping Giant State Park entrance, until you come to the next street on your Right, Tuttle Ave. (It's just beyond Wentworth's Ice Cream, well worth the stop after). Go about one mile past beautiful fields with horses, to a small pull-off on your Right, which has room for about 3-4 vehicles. You will notice a white on black "X" symbol for cross country skiing, and a similar "U", which is a horse shoe, indicating it is a horse trail, and a Red Circle.

Follow the sequence outlined here to find the Jolly Mean Giant.

XU^ X UX< U X ~ X U X U X X U X U X U UX> X X X X XX< X
X

When you reach the last X (if you don't see any more Xs for a long time, you went to far. Turn around and go back to the last X you saw.) look directly to your left. You should see a group of fallen trees layed out in parallel. Follow these trunks for 22 steps (until you reach the end) and have a look under the base of these trunks.

Here you'll find a carving of classic Wacky Packages die cut sticker, the Jolly Mean Giant. Stamp in and enjoy the rest of your day.

Update: April 13, 2021

New clue: park at the wooden guardrail and note the first U on the left, and the rest of the clue goes:
ux^ x ux< ~ x x u x u x x u x u x u uux> x x x x x x< x 45

The trees have become decomposed so follow two long mulch lines 22 steps to a standing tree with a hidy hole at the bottom. In the hole, under a flat rock is your box.

This box has only been found twice since 2014, in a park that gets a LOT of boxers, so maybe the clue is to hard. If you look at a map and can't figure it out, email me.
