Travel south from Hwy 24 to Baja Orinda along the main road which is named after a spanish landowner and you will find a city park named after a very common California tree. You will recognize the name in Spanish as Encina or by it biological name, Quercus agrifolia . There is a church named after the son of Zebedee and Salome just to the north of this park.
When you find the park, walk up the stairs. You will find a dirt/ gravel path leading northeastward up the hill. As you follow this path up the hill, look up, for eagles and hawks and high flying powerful cylindrical, elongated strands of drawn metal that crisscross the park. Follow the trail about 500 yards and you will come to a bench and a “rules” sign. From this vantage point you will see the trail dip down to a creek. You will see you next sign post bearing 350 degrees from the bench. Stay on the trail to the next signpost which is the intersection of the Ridge trail and Nature Trail. Put your compass on the top of the trail marker and locate the large Encina bearing 260 degrees from the signpost. Standing at the trunk of this large Encina, look back at the sign post you just passed and notice the 3” diameter branch that dips to the ground pointing at the sign post.
You will find your treasure about 8 paces away from the trunk under a pile of leaves and well worn river rocks. Good hunting. Please put the rocks back over the letterbox after you find it.
