Chapter I: A Letterboxing We Shall Go

Once upon a time there lived a happy family of three. Letterboxing was discovered, and the family was even happier. They took on a new identity, the “Pond and Roses People”, for they began growing roses many years ago, when they were only a young couple, and they had recently learned the fine art of water gardening. All enjoyed the outdoors, hiking, bicycling, nature and adventure, and everyone loved a good mystery or puzzle. Letterboxing was perfect. They found many letterboxes together, looked for more letterboxes on vacation around the US and even hid some of their own.

Chapter II: A Hitchhiker Hostel is Found

While the youngest member of the “People” was away at camp in the summer of 2006, the couple decided to take a road trip to Lawrence, Kansas to find letterboxes. An abundance of them existed in that fair city including something called the I-70 Joyrider Hitchhiker Hostel. That sounded like a bunch of fun, so off they went! They found the hostel and decided that their neck of the woods could benefit from another such thing. The idea was born!

Chapter III: The Search is On

Since they had decided they were going to build a hitchhiker hostel of their own, they went seeking the perfect container. They also decided that they had better find a bunch of letterboxes fast, so they could collect a variety of hitchhikers to put in it. So they went furiously seeking letterboxes in search of more hitchhikers. It was a nearly fruitless endeavor. Many of the boxes were microboxes or had no hitchhikers in them. They found one hitchhiker, and the hope was still alive. They even started carving more hitchhikers of their own.

Chapter III: Things are About to Change

They were having a grand time until on day… they noticed that the youngest member of the family was constantly complaining that she “didn’t want to go letterboxing” (add a large dose of whine to that statement). She had fun once she was out letterboxing, though, usually taking the lead getting to the box and demanding to read the clues for herself. (Dah, da Dah!) The youngest member of the People had entered puberty. Puberty does strange things to the body. It makes the legs grow grossly disproportionate for a while, causes new and pungent odors to occur and the hair to become greasy. It also changes the attitude causing unusual outbursts of emotion, slamming of doors and a sudden desire to be left alone and dislike family functions. What it does not change is the continued love of nature, hiking, bicycling and the occasional puzzle or mystery. Going with the family to “enjoy” these things became a struggle, but the parents were persistent. They discovered that somewhere between this love of nature and the love of the hunt existed an interest in carving. So, the youngest member of the “People” began carving stamps and made a hitchhiker of her own. Of course, the mother had to do the rest of the work, because she also discovered that puberty frequently causes something commonly referred to as the “lazy bone”. Things were still good since they were still doing something together and having fun doing it.

Chapter IV: Planting the Hitchhiker Hostel

Placing the box, they soon discovered was a much more delicate matter than the ordinary letterbox placement. The “People” decided they wanted to plant the box close enough to home to be able to check on it frequently, but somewhere that lots of letterboxers would want to stop by and trade hitchhikers. It needed to be a bit of a challenge to find and placed somewhere that non-letterboxers were unlikely to find it. They found the perfect spot and named it the MO 150-71 Hitchhiker Hostel. The moody one stayed in the car while the parents had fun placing the box. The IPod and the Novels were an excellent investment in family peacekeeping.

Chapter V: Just Tell Us Where to Find the Danged Box!

The obvious part is you need to get to the intersection of Missouri Highways 150 and 71. Once you are there, turn toward the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. Don’t go too far too fast. You are almost there. Do you see the path where KATY and MOPAC might pass? Look both ways and keep going. You need to take the next turn toward the Mall of America. Your next challenge is to find where you used to be able to drive through and deposit your check. You will have to look carefully for the entrance as it has become covered in mud and weeds, and you are going to have to get out and walk at this point. “Drive through” and turn the corner. Go toward The Ozarks and “park” in the handicapped space. You will notice four or more young “dwellers” in front of you who have grown up between the cracks in the sidewalk. They are pretty amazing. Walk toward Aurora Borealis and around to the side closest to the original American Girl Place. You will find the box at the base of the second dweller south under rocks. Please re-hide well. Thanks and Happy Letterboxing.

…and they lived happily letterboxing ever after…
