6/23/10 6/19/09 6/24/08 Box in fine condition.

The John Day River reaches the Columbia just east of The Dalles, OR, at I-84. There is an RV park there, or for those with a boat, you can head up the John Day to a boat-only camping park called Phillipi Park. Cold showers & water available. Carefull, the sprinklers come on at night to water the grass, and your tentsite too. It's just a few boat-miles upriver from I-84 to Phillipi.

A few more miles up from Phillipi is the area called The Narrows. It will be obvious when you get there. The wide, open river surrounded by high, brown, rolling hills will narrow down, and rocky canyon walls will jut out from the hills. On the right, the rocky area is relatively flat at first. It allows for boats to anchor up, and for people to Fly-fish from the bank. On a busy day you probably won't see more than 5-6 boats there. You will see a single spire on the RIGHT side, near the entrance to the Narrows. Park your boat somewhere around there.

This box will take around a half hour to walk to, not including extra time for stamping, or allowing for 90-110* heat. Bring water, even a short walk in the heat is exhausting. Scout around the brown hillside in front of you for a trail that leads up to the top of the rocky cliffs. The trail splits occasionally but just follow it along the bluff as close to the edge as you like. WATCH FOR RATTLESNAKES! You can also watch for deer and coyotes (we heard them at night).

WATCH FOR RATTLESNAKES!

Pass the angling deadline across the canyon from you. Pass 2 trees on your left. Pass 2 trees on your left. Pass the valley of green w/2 mature trees on the far side, and notice the rapids below. Pass the juniper on your right. Come around a corner to view a swampy oasis of cattails & greenery. Head between the water & the wall. Against the rock wall is a pile of rocks that first looked to me to be a geocache, but was not, it's around 3x1 1/2 feet. WATCH FOR RATTLESNAKES! Look behind the rocks and under a couple more for the box.

Back where you tied up your boat, take the time to explore the rock islands and canyon in front of you. You can boat up into the Narrows for a short ways before it becomes too narrow to navigate. Notice the black rocks at the bottom of the canyon walls, and red at the top. It's a great place to explore the smooth volcanic islands and even the occasional cave in the canyon walls.
