August 2009 note: This box appears to have been muggled. I won't archive it for now, as I hope to replace it in the future, but please don't go hunting for it until it's back. Sorry!

For reasons known only to obscure inventors of nomenclature, a male swan is called a “cob,” and a female is a “pen.” One wonders if people long ago found that female swan feathers made superior writing quills. One should really look into this, but one is too lazy.

Manito Park in Spokane used to have a pair of cobs (who seemed to get along regardless of the overbalance of testosterone), until one recent year when someone ran over the pair with a car; it is believed the hit-and-run was intentional. Park-goers in Spokane were distraught, and a reporter at the local paper put together a photo tribute:

This micro box is planted in memory of the Manito swans.

The code is one people see every day. (It’s Subtle But Normal.) The system is switching from ten digits to thirteen. Keep in mind that subtitles are superfluous.
