NOTE: THIS IS A SERIES OF 6 BOXES LOCATED IN LITTLETON. LISTED AS: WESTWARD TRAIL. It is about an 8 mile loop of driving. It is kid friendly, dog friendly, and (except for box number 6) stroller friendly. For box # 6 you can easily carry your child. The total time to do the entire loop is about 1-2 hours! At each box you will find a brief and interesting historical note about Littleton. All of the clues and directions for the six boxes are below:

YOU MUST FOLLOW BOXES IN ORDER OR ELSE THE CLUES WILL NOT WORK!

You will need to bring your own ink pad and stamp for these boxes.

BOX #1: PIKES PEAK

For Box # 1 get to the intersection of Coal Mine and Bowles in Littleton. (One easy way to get to this intersection is to take C-470 to Bowles Ave and exit heading East. When you get to Simms, turn right. OR from Kipling and Bowles, go west on Bowles till you get to Simms, then turn left.) At the next intersection with a traffic light, you will be at Coal Mine and Simms. Summit Ridge Middle School will be on your right and Abiding Hope Lutheran church will be on your left (southeast corner). Turn RIGHT onto Coal Mine.

You are now heading west on Coalmine, toward the foothlls.

Now begin to follow the clues:

Drive down Coal Mine road just 4/10ths of a mile
then quickly turn left, this won’t be a trial.

Up a slight hill you’ll go as the road curves around
Pull into a “Peak” parking lot that you’ve found.

Get out of your car and put your face south
Cross the road carefully, I’m sure you know how.

Onto the sidewalk and head toward the hills
Slightly downhill 75 paces more still.

Look over your shoulder and up to the right
A sign says 'Ahead', so you know you're all right.

At 20 steps more, turn your body back north,
And cross the road again, to no sidewalk of course.

Please be real careful at this place where you cross
The cars coming by here don’t think you are boss.

Ahead of your face you will see a stone wall
It’s built nice and neat and curves around small.

Go to the end of the curve and then look
At the rocks at the end for the stamp and the book.

You may have to move a few smaller rocks, but don’t worry
It’s not really hard and you don’t have to hurry.

So stamp our book and tell us about you
Then hide it real well for the next boxer too.

BOX #2: THREE HORSES (Please try to be very discreet at this box and rehide well!)

For box number two, go get back in your car
Pull out of the lot and turn left, there you are.

You’ll go down a hill on a quite lumpy road
Then turn right on Simms and follow our code.

Up past a golf course as you curve around
To box number 2 which will soon be found.

There is a King Soopers ahead on the right,
Just before Ken Caryl, so keep that in sight.

You want to turn right going toward that store
But you’re not going shopping, so turn right once more.

As soon as you see the sign of three horses
You’ll know you are close, So follow your noses.

You’ll park in the lot of the three horses place
Get out of your car, to the north put your face.

Walk to the end of the lot, it’s not far
Look for some steps and a rail, not a car

Walk 6 steps downward and forward 3 more
The ugly green box sits there, with no door.

Move the rocks near your foot and you'll find
Box #2 of the 3 Horses kind.

BOX #3: CREEKSIDE

Go right back out the way you came,
turn right onto Simms, the street is the same.

At Ken Caryl turn left, and drive the east way
Then left onto Kipling and now we will say,

To Coal Mine you'll go, it's 4/10ths of a mile
Turn right on this road, you're beginning to smile.

Then a quick left on Garrison where THE TREE HIDES THE SIGN
(So be on the lookout so you turn left in time.)

Past 4 MORE streets then left onto Weaver,
You'll see "Lil Store," now isn't that clever?

Three tenths down Weaver till you see Holland Way
Where you will turn right, and you're well on your way.

Lilley Gulch is the place your muscles go far,
so turn left there and park your car.

You must park in the most southeast corner spot,
get out of you car, now you're really getting hot!

Now please turn your body and face Holland Way,
You will see a STOP sign that'll just make your day.

To this sign you must walk, just a few paces.
Then turn to the right, on the sidewalk keep your laces.

Down the sidewalk and over a very small bridge
that crosses a tiny creek, look at you, you're a whiz!

Up ahead on your right see a box colored green,
About three feet tall with its contents unseen.

STOP at this box, to the west put your face,
Do you see a large tree? Then you're in the right place.

Though this tree is quite tall, it has a wide girth,
With many low trunks that give it unique worth.

47 paces to this very tree
And you will find "Creekside" - that's box number 3!

Find the two trunks nearest to the side of the creek,
Then find a stick to poke around and take a peek.

Sometimes there are lots of spider webs here,
use your stick to clear them away if you fear.

The microbox is hidden where the trunks cross eachother
Quite easy to find with just a little bother.

Please rehide well and then let me know
if there are any problems with Creekside after you go.

BOX #4: ROUGH AND READY

Pull out of the lot and take a left turn.
A quick right onto Park Hill and soon you will learn,

That box number 4 is near many books
And a park and some trees so go, take a look.

When Parkway ends you will come to a light
Turn left when it’s green and keep a good sight,

For Bowles Avenue, where you will head east,
Away from the mountains, but traffic won’t cease.

So just keep on going, past a place full of books
For a blue tile sign you are searching, so look -

The sign will say “Robert” and a last name too.
Turn right at the sign and keep following these clues.

You will come to a “T”, we suggest you turn left.
You’ll see trees on some“islands”, be astute and be deft.

Choose the tree in the middle of island numero tres,
Park your car and get out, toward the west put your face.

Walk around this tiny island to the west side and down
At the base of the middle tree, Rough and Ready will be found. (Please be very careful that no one sees you here.)

BOX #5: RIO GRANDE

Now get back in your car and go back where you came,
But drive straight to the book place with a Columbine name.

Drive past the front, curve around to the light.
Turn left onto Bowles, Keeping the foothills in sight.

You’ll drive across Wadsworth and Kipling street too,
Start looking to your left so you’ll know what to do.

You’ll go past a place that sells flowers and trees
Make a very quick left onto Oak Street, now, please.

You’ll drive down 4/10ths of a mile on Oak
And pull your car over and park, that’s no joke.

Get up on the sidewalk and count 30 paces.
Go past a sign that shows teetertotter places.

Just another 25 paces or so,
look off toward the right and you will know,

there's the end of a fence just behind a small tree,
Walk over there for what we've planted for thee.

Search at the fence end for the RIO GRANDE box,
We've covered it carefully with a nice handy rock.

BOX #6: PACKER STEW

You’re nearing the end, now, of Westward trail.
One final search and then you can bail.

Get back in your car and go back north on Oak
Till you get to Bowles, you letterboxing folk.

At the light you will turn to head toward the hills
Then turn left on Simms to use your letterboxing skills.

At the next red, yellow and green you’ll turn right.
The name of this street is a digger’s delight.

Drive exactly .4 on the odometer,
Then hang a right on Van Gordon by a sign and a fir.

An immediate left will take you to play
A game that’s in Wimbledon, down old London Way.

Get out of the car and turn toward the south,
Are there 6 picnic tables, but nary a house?

Then you’re on the right track, so go now and stand
At the southwest corner of the car parking land.

65 paces past all of these tables
And soon we know that you will be able

To see 5 metal boxes standing just so,
With the biggest one green and darker, you know.

At the base of this box you might want to look
Just under some rocks down by your foot.

And there it is - PACKER STEW is found,
That’s the end of the trail, you letterboxing hound.

(Please be very discreet when doing your stamping here, as sometimes teens hang out near this place. Hide very carefully, too, being careful to NOT build an obvious cairn over the box. It should be well hidden but not something someone would really notice (like a big lump of rocks where one shouldn't belong.)

Well, we sure hope you’ve liked the westward trail,
and learning about Littleton With our little tale.
You’ve been a good sport with all of our rhymes
But along the way, we hope you’ve had a good time!

We'd love to hear from you regarding this series. Also, if you find any of these boxes in need of help or repair, please email me at kls730@comcast.net. Thanks!
