Thanks for looking up the Coal Creek Trail's "Little Happy Camper" letterbox! This box was "planted" by Pagosa Bible Church's family camp - where we introduced the "art" of letterboxing to many families and enjoyed making stamps and journals to use. This is our first "planted" letterbox!

Attractions near this letterbox: Sand Creek, many great camping spots, up the road is Silver Falls, and up farther is Elwood Pass (need a good 4x4 to tackle the pass).

This is a great letterbox for younger kids as it doesn't require a long hike (only about 1/4 mile) and Sand Creek is great stream to play in. To find this letterbox, head east on Hwy 160 out of Pagosa Springs. Turn right on FR 667 that follows the East Fork of the San Juan (East Fork Road). Stay on FR 667 for about 3 1/2 miles. On your right will be the Coal Creek and Quartz Ridge trailheads just before the second bridge that crosses the East Fork of the San Juan.

Start out on the Coal Creek trailhead and head up the short hill on the trail. You'll come into a nice meadow. Travel across the meadow on the trail until you come to the first small pine tree that you can touch with your right hand while standing on the trail. From the little pine tree, continue on the trail for 30 steps. After counting out 30 paces, look to your left for a big pine tree that has recently fallen down. Take 22 steps up the hill on your left toward the fallen tree, following a faint game trail. The "Little Happy Camper" is under a small pile of rocks under the fallen tree. Please replace the rocks to keep it hidden.
