**TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE**

Terra Salis is latin meaning "the salt of the earth." Malden, WV is literally "Terra Salis" having been born out of the salt mining industry. In the early days, Malden was the "big city" instead of Charleston, but a fire that wiped out most of the stores changed that.

This box is hidden in Booker T. Washington Park, roughly in the center of this small town. There is some parking behind the park in the Stevens & Grass Funeral Home parking lot. Booker T. Washington came to live in Malden after he and his mother were freed as slaves. He worked in the salt mines for awhile, then began to work for Viola Ruffner, the wife of the man who practically built Malden. History has it that Viola was a very hard woman to please, but Booker was able to impress her. The Ruffners were instrumental in Booker's education, who eventually became an educator at the famous Tuskegee Institute. This park is located on the former site of Booker's half-sister's home.

In the park, stand with your back to the large brick sign. Find the light post in the farthest corner. From that light post look at the evergreen tree and remember the nursery rhyme "Rock a Bye Baby." You may have to stand on your tip-toes to "finish the song."

**WARNING** There is a geocache in this park close to the letterbox. The letterbox is a plastic container with a yellow sticker saying "Official Letterbox."

You will need your own pen and ink pad. Please let me know about your trip!
