###### Temporarily unavailable - in for repairs #######

This box was placed by Girl Scout Troop 167 to introduce others to the History of East Goshen Township.

This Box is located in Historic Goshenville.

The ten square miles of this land that is now the Township of East Goshen was part of a larger tract purchased from William Penn in Wales in September 1681. Settlers, finding the land beautiful and productive named the area Goshenville, or "the Land of Goshen."

The blacksmith shop located on North Chester Road was built in 1699. It was here in the early years that wagon wheels were rerimmed, farm implements repaired, and horses shod. As part of East Goshen's tricentennial in 1982, the blacksmith shop was renovated and restored.

East Goshen Township was incorporated in 1817 when Goshen was divided, forming East and West Goshen Townships.

Within a 1/4 mi. of this site there are at least 4 historic buildings that have had roles in our country's history. The Goshen Meeting located at the corner of N. Chester Road (rt.352) and Paoli Pike, The Tory Inne, which was the original General Store and Post office, the Blacksmith's Shop and the Hickman Plank House. British Troops marched up N. Chester Road after the Battle of the Brandywine toward Paoli where they defeated the colonial soldiers during the Paoli Massacre.

DIRECTIONS:

This box is located at the corner of N. Chester Road (rt. 352) and E. Boot Road in East Goshen Pennsylvania.

****There will be a blacksmith and other volunteers at this site between 1 and 4 on Saturdays. They are very interesting to talk to. Plan on getting the box either before or after this time to keep the secret ******

CLUE:

Once you are where horses get shoes. Stand at the wooden carriage door. Turn your back to the smith. Go about 30 paces to the grey opening. This leads you to the yard of the historic Hickman Plank House. Now find yourself at the place where you would enter the house. Under the bottom tread you will find what you seek. Be careful not to be seen. This is a vey public location. Repalce it how you found it. Continue on to our next box, Squirrel Shack, at East Goshen Park.
