This series of 3 boxes is hidden at the Andres Institute of Art, a 140 acre sculpture park located on Big Bear Mountain in Brookline, NH. (www.andresinstitute.org) More than 50 sculptures are scattered among the woods and meadows of the mountain. The sculptors have come from every corner of the world and have used a wide variety of materials. The sculptures stimulate reflection, giggles, delight, even anxiety. We have hidden 4 letterboxes (Flower of the Anasazi, and this series) in this favorite spot in hopes that families will take a picnic and spend the day rambling the trails and celebrating art and nature. Dancin’ Feet also hid a box called Andres Institute Letterbox on this mountain. In fact, it was Dancin’ Feet’s letterbox that got us turned on to this spot.

We suggest you plan to take some time to walk around and enjoy this wonderful sculpture park. This will be easier if you print out a map and sculpture list from their website. There are often maps at the parking lot, but you can’t be sure.

Alternative Futures #1: Start at “Debate”. Take a moment to look at the woods through the crystal ball one of the creatures holds. Then, facing the kneeling figure, notice a trail leaving the clearing on the right at 30 degrees. Follow this trail—it starts parallel to the road and then curves left. After about 65 foot steps, you will enter a small grove of old hemlock trees. Near the entrance to the grove, on your right, stands a tree with 3 trunks. Turn around to face the way you came in. (the 3-trunked tree on your left, a large hemlock on your right). When you entered the clearing you stepped on/over a flat rock about 4-5 feet across (it is at 200 degrees). Alternative Futures #1 is hidden under the edge closest to you.

Alternative Futures #2: Next, find “Transitions”, a scorpion-like creature with a sphinx face. Face-to-face with the creature, look at 220 degrees (to your left). Six foot steps from the sculpture's left wheel you will find a 5-sided flat rock. Under one edge (at 220 degrees) is Alternative Futures #2.

Alternative Futures #3: Now, go to “Earth, Wind, and Fire”, one of our favorites for beauty and grace. With your back to the sculpture, take 42 steps at 220 degrees. You will arrive at the domed rock about 2.5 feet tall (there were also 3 square wooden frames when we hid the box but we don’t know if they will stay there). Now take 15 steps at 175 degrees to a 3-trunked oak tree with 2 of the trunks cut off about waist-high. The heart of this tree is cradling Alternative Futures #3. (It will be easiest to re-hide the box if you notice the way it is laying when you find it.)

Enjoy and let us know your thoughts.
