If searching for this box please remember that this is not located on a marked trail. Any trail that is associated with finding this box is used by fishermen to access stream/fishing waters. Appropriate clothing should be worn. If you choose to fish in addition to finding this box please note all Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission regulations as to special regulation fishing. If there happen to be fishermen fishing, please be respectful and avoid disrupting their fishing by throwing rocks or creating a lot of noise.

With Puddleby living out of the state the year prior to our wedding, I found that I had a lot of time on my hands after work. So, that spring and summer my schedule consisted of working, fishing and traveling to see Puddleby (at least twice a month). The fly rod pretty much stayed in the truck and I would head right for the stream from work. On this particular early summer afternoon it had gotten very hot. They were calling for scattered thunder storms. I was able to get some fishing in before the rain started. I stayed on the stream once the rain started but then I heard the thunder. I reeled in my line and headed for the truck. I got all of my fishing gear off (neoprene chest waders now, no more rubber hip boots) and sat in the truck deciding to wait it out. As I was sitting in the truck, my mind running a mile a minute, a bolt of lightning struck a tree in the grove behind the tree farm. I never did find the tree that was struck but what an experience to see that kind of power so close.

In order to find the Lightning letterbox you will need to traverse the Muncy Creek bed. This box was placed in late spring and I was able to avoid getting wet. I would suggest that you plan on getting wet (worst case scenario), by wearing some type of creek shoe or fishing boots/waders. Cross the bridge over Muncy Creek on Boston Rd in the north end of the village of Picture Rocks. Park on the right hand side of the road making sure not to block the slightly used, unmarked road to the right. After exiting your vehicle walk back towards the bridge and descend to the creek bed on the right hand side of the bridge. Heading up stream you’ll travel approximately 74 paces to a large double tree (if the rocks are wet, be careful, they will be slippery). As reference points there will be a large double pine tree at approximately 51 paces, one of which is dead and at 63 paces you should see a set of concrete steps to your right up on top of the bank. Once you have reached the double trees at 74 paces, the letter box is concealed in the rock pile at the base of the tree on the north side. You do not need to go around the tree as the rock that you need to move to find the letterbox is visible from the creek bed you just walked up.

Hand carved stamp, recommended colors: gray & yellow

If you are trying to obtain the clues for the bonus box: Stonefly’s Fishing Adventures: Nymph, you will need to know the number of points on the lightning bolt of the stamped image. Answer is also written on the inside of the lid.

***Please use discretion, snap lid tightly and replace securely. Box contains stamp and log; BYO ink and pen. A pace is two steps (left footfall, right footfall = one pace). We appreciate your comments regarding the condition of the box and its contents.***
