In March, 1880 the first Southern Pacific train reached Tucson, Ariz. Today, I am told, some 72 trains pass through Tucson daily…and I believe it. While going to visit family nearby, I more often than not get stopped at this particular railroad crossing and I like to say, “well, that’s another 5 minutes of my life I’ll never get back.” With any luck, you too will get to see a train. You’ll know the train is approaching the grade crossing when you hear the following warning whistle – two long whistles, followed by one short, then one long. This whistle signal is known worldwide as Rule 14L in nearly all railroad operating rules.
Clues: From I-10, take exit 269, (Wilmot Rd.) and turn left. Follow Wilmot north to the railroad crossing Or, from Valencia Rd., turn south on Wilmot Rd. until you come to the railroad crossing. Locate the railroad arm with 9935 on it. At the base of the post you will find the letterbox under a pile of black, irregular shaped rocks. Bonus: there are often stray railroad spikes laying around. Enjoy the souvenir.
Please be sure to note if you witnessed a train crossing while searching for this letterbox.
