Gilboa, NY is located SW of Albany. To reach the Gilboa Fossils letterbox, take Route 30 South out of Middleburgh, At the intersection of Rt. 30 and 990V, make a left onto Rt. 990V. Take this road to the bottom of the hill, across the bridge. After the bridge, look for the parking lot on the left. If you passed the post office, you've gone too far. From the parking lot, go past the main stand of fossils and look for the large Root System Fossil. These fossils look like large "bolders" but they are actually fossils of large trees that were alive millions of years ago.

Facing the Root System Fossil, look behind and slightly to the right, go about 20 steps into the brushy area. You will see 3 tree stumps. In the middle stump is what you seek.

Please re-hide with leaf litter, as this is a fairly visible location.

We hope you enjoy finding our first letterbox. The stamp is a hand-drawn fossil completed by a local artist.

Would you like to find another letterbox in the area?

Close by you can find the Gilboa Museum letterbox: Directions to this one are also on the website. From the Fossil parking lot, make a right and go across the bridge and head up the hill. 3/10 of a mile from the fossils, make a right onto Stryker Road, take the first right into the driveway for the Gilboa Museum. You will see large stacks of Rocks. Starting at the end closest to the museum, go to the 3rd pile of rocks, under the pile in a hollow behind a smaller rock is what you seek. Please rehide well, as this is also a very open area.
