As you probably know, dogs are descendents of wolves. But, did you know that wolves live in packs of 8-20? Dominant wolves are called leaders. Wolves can hear much higher sounds than we can. For example, wolves can hear sounds with a pitch of 40-46,000 HZ (waves per second). To a wolf, a scent trail is a load of information. It can tell wolves where an animal went, how fast it was traveling, and how long ago it was there.

Suggested parking: the parking lot of Westmore Woods Park at Ahrens Court, just north of Maple Avenue. The park is also accessible from the Great Western Trail and Westmore Avenue. The clues, though, start from the parking lot.

From the parking lot, take the paved trail around the playground. Listen for the distant howling of the wolves. The wolves stay away from the playground because there are too many noisy kids playing there. Continue on the trail around the playground. Along the way, you will pass a clearing on the left with pavement that ends after about 15 feet. Continue past this area. The wolves can hear you coming. After a short while, the paved road curves to the left and then to the right. You will then see a path on the left that leads into the woods. Take this woodchip trail into the woods. The wolves are in the woods and are anxious for your arrival. At the T, take the right path. Take this path and follow it along the water's edge. Watch for wolves that come to drink in the pond. Continue along to the left. The path curves slightly to the right. You will see a 6-trunked tree. Yes, a 6-trunked tree. The wolves are cozy in the middle of the trunks.

Markers are provided in the box. Brown, black, and yellow. Continue to the right and you will soon come to the Great Western Trail. Or head back to your car the same way you came.
