Taylor Lake Village is a very small community that basically consists of a neighborhood or two, a police force of 3, a school, 2 parks, and a city hall. But it works independantly from other communities and is its own municipality. This is our home park and we love to bike on the trails, go crabbing, and play hide and seek in the trees. We hope you love it too!

To get to the Taylor Lake Village Park from Houston, go south on I-45, turn left on Nasa rd 1, turn left on Kirby. The city hall is about .5 mile down the road at 500 Kirby Blvd. on the right side. Pull into the second entrance to City Hall, there are a couple of parking spots and the pink gravel trail begins right there. Also, there is an excellent meat market on Kirby, almost across from city hall on the left side. Good jerky for snackin'.

The idea of this series is that letterboxing has many parts that make it interesting. To complete this series, you will be completing one very large stamp. So bring your markers and figure on this stamp being about 4in x 4in when finished. I have laid out the elements on the stamp so that they fit into a 9 part grid (3 x 3), and you will first have to find the frame. Once you've stamped it, you will be able to see where other items fit, or just stop there and add your own objects to the scene.

OK, now lets get to the boxing! From that pink gravel trail by where you parked, you are immediately confronted with a lake. Take the side of the trail around the lake that has the willow and the bridge. When you get to the T, go right. You should cross a dirt road and another small wooden bridge. After the bridge, STOP, look to your right. You should see several downed telephone poles. At the end of the second pole, in front of a 3 trunked tree you should find THE FRAME AND THE FINDER.

After stamping, go back to the trail where you stepped off. Take a compass reading at 340 degrees. You should see a tree with spanish moss. Walk to that tree, it should have a black KEEP OUT sign nailed to it. No one knows what this means, but its a good marker because WAYFINDER is at the base under the brush, walk around to the back of the tree for easier access.

Back to the trail where you left off before. Keep following the trail, past an educational sign. Notice those white perches to your right? Sometimes feathered park residents sit on those and fish. Keep following the trail past the pier to the right. Have some extra time, string, and bacon? Why not go crabbing? If not, then keep on the trail, it should bend to the right. Spot the two benches on the right side of the trail? Walk to the benches, have a rest if you need it. Then walk 50 steps farther on the trail and look to the right for a tree at the brushline. NIGHT SHIFT WORKER is hiding at the base of that tree.

From the tree, take a compass reading. At 40 degrees, you should see a large fallen tree that is about 150 yards away. Walk towards that tree. About half way to the tree you will pass some telephone poles laying on their sides. BRAGGIN' RIGHTS is hidden in a hole carved in one of those poles.

Keep walking towards the downed tree. When you arrive there, look under the tree where the trunk forks. INNOCENT BYSTANDER is hiding there.

Jump back on the path that is just past the fallen tree (to the North). Follow the trail going NW. As you are walking, keep looking to your left for a tree with an enormous hollow base. There's nothing in the tree because this is a favorite playspace of the area's children, but its interesting nonetheless. When you locate the large hollowed tree, look at those bushes to the left of it. There is a popular geocache in there. Moona and Dittr have to leave some junk in it each time we go to the park. Now back to the trail, heading NW, you will cross a wooden bridge. Keep walking straight, leaving the trail. There should be a clump of bushes there. GREAT TEXAS BIRDING TRAIL ADVOCATE is hiding in the brush, to the right.

Now walk toward the pavilion and keep looking up and around. Can you see the water tower? They just painted it, and doesn't it look nice? Walk towards the water tower, taking whatever way you wish. As you near the water tower. you will see a bench swing by the lake. Stop and take a swing if your tired. When your ready, get back on the trail heading NW, There are 2 willows by the fence of the water tower. THE QUARRY is hidden in the center of the first willow.

Congratulations, you've completed a tour of a park that is near to our hearts and our house. And you've probably got a big colorful stamped image to boot. I hope you've had fun, please email and let us know what you thought. Please, as always, rehide well. There's not a lot of cover at the park and there are tons of kiddos around here in the evenings.

Cheers,
hoppers, moona, dittr and helter-skelter
