Enter the Pruyn Sanctuary
275 Millwood Road/Route 133
Chappaqua/Millwood
To the Butterfly Box:
Park on the left side just before the sign. Walk towards the Butterfly Garden which will be on your right. Just past the butterfly garden is a “Carolina Silverbell”tree. At the base of this tree is the butterfly letterbox. Please re-hide well so people cannot see it as they pass by in both directions.
To the Chipmunk Box:
The paths are grassy in the spring and summer. In the winter and early spring the field may be cut/flat. Make a left and walk towards the: “To Pond/Boardwalk” sign. Travel down the path to where you will find ferns that line each side of the path. You will find a stone wall with a large gap just before this area. Approx. 13 paces from the gap, is a stone wall with a large tree just in front of it. Between the rocks at base of the tree is the chipmunk letterbox. If you pass the Stone wall Habitat sign, you have gone too far. ( Go back 30 paces )
To the Owl Box:
You will come to a sign that says: “A Habitat’s Edge.” At the Y, go right. You will come to an “Outdoor Classroom” on the left. Enter the classroom and walk towards the podium. At the base of the railing post directly in front of the podium is the Owl letterbox. Please place back on the blocks. Stay a while and listen for the owls, if you are there late in the day.
To the Muskrat Box:
Back on the boardwalk turn left at the “Swamp Shrubs” sign. Make another left at the “Swamp Floor” sign. You will see a overturned tree which the Muskrat likes to hang out under during the day. Just after the boardwalk ends, is a bird blind. Enter and sit a while. Under the wooden ledge is a wooden bracket which holds the Muskrat letterbox. Nice spot to watch for the muskrat and the mallard ducks that swim here.
To the Duck Box:
Back on the path, you will see 3 gray boards lining the swampy floor to help you cross. Follow the three boards, you will come to a break in the stone wall. On the right side, a white boulder and a rotten tree lays across the wall. Hidden under natural debris is the Duck Letterbox. Please re-hide well. At the Y, go left and follow the trail back to the entrance.

This letterbox series is great for kids.
