My apologies to charlottesweb, who recently planted the first box here. I had the stamp carved, the clues written but hadn’t planted the box yet. I hope nobody minds another reason to come to Stark’s Knob!

From Saratoga Springs drive east on Rte 29 to Schuylerville. At the traffic light in Schuylerville, turn left (north) onto Rte 4. The parking area is about a mile on the left. From the parking area, walk up the hill to the entrance of the park on the right.

Stark's Knob has long been famous as being an old volcano.
It is formed of volcanic rock, but is actually a volcanic pillow.
"Pillows" form when basalt lava flows up from deep cracks or vents
and erupts under water forming the billowing shapes that are evident.
The cooling basalt lava spills from the vent and rolls downward,
where ball-like forms known as pillows pile up, or so I have heard.
This is one of the very few in the eastern part of this continent.
Go climb on the pillows and imagine the forceful lava vent.
Fossil snails have been found between the pillows of basalt.
Their presence indicates this area was once a shallow sea of salt.
Small cavities, sometimes filled with the mineral calcite,
are ancient steam bubbles captured for our delight.
The triangular "volcano shape" shape of the hill
is due to quarrying that removed the east side, if you will.
Facing the hill, climb the path on the left of the rock outcrop.
Once at the rock, continue just 10 feet or so more up.
Behind a large rock with veins of white,
Find the box before you get to a precarious height!
