Make Way for Ducklings!
Wachusett Reservoir Watershed
Sterling, MA
9 stamps, 8 in film canisters, last in box with logbook
Park in the lot at the corner of Chace Hill Road and Route 110 and cross the street to the trailhead.
Mrs. Mallard brought her little ones to Sterling (where there once was a duck farm) for a stroll. Being mischievous, they decided to hide rather than follow along behind her. Can you find them all and reunite them with their Mom?
1. Jack. Noisy Jack was the first to leave the group. Shortly after entering the trail, you will come to a clearing on both sides of the trail. After that, you will see a cluster of boulders on the right followed by a single freestanding boulder. Look behind on the right for Jack.
2. Kack. Continue on the trail. Look on the right for a stonewall going perpendicular to the trail. Walk along this wall until you get to the large tree on the right side, about 3 feet from the wall. Look in the hollow in the base of the tree to find silly little Kack.
3. Lack. Continue on, you will come to a pile of stones (the remnants of a wall, perhaps?) in front of a tree on the right. Look behind the tree to find silly little Lack in the crevice between 2 rocks.
4. Mack. Continue on, the trail will descend and curve. Look for a small path on the left that leads to the water. Go down the path to a cellar hole near the water’s edge. Enter the cellar hole and go to the left corner. Facing the wall, look slightly to the left for a shelf-type opening. Adventurous little Mack is on that shelf behind a loose stone.
5. Nack. Go back to the main trail. Walk on and just before you come to the brook, look on the left side of the trail for a double trunked tree. Sweet little Nack in hidden behind that tree.
6. Ouack. Pass over brook, at fork take the right uphill. Walk on for awhile until you see a single boulder set back about 5-6 feet off the path on the left, shy little Ouack hides behind that boulder.
7. Pack. Continue along uphill, the trail will eventually begin to even out. Around that point look for a single boulder on the right, nestled behind that rock is funny little Pack.
8. Quack. Keep going until you get to a T junction in the trail with 3 trees on the right with white arrows painted on them. Look behind the 3rd tree for happy little Quack.
9. Go in the direction indicated by the arrows and follow along this path. Eventually you will come to a path on the left that leads to the water. Take that path and look for a stump on the right with another stump about 6-7 feet behind it. Go to that stump and look slightly ahead to the right for a moss covered stump. Behind that, under a log, Mrs. Mallard awaits her wayward children.
