Lock 5 is part of the Champlain Canal system of locks that allow boats to travel along the Hudson River. The lock system stretches from Whitehall near the Vermont border down to Mechanicville.

From Route 29 heading east out of Saratoga, proceed on to Schuylerville, about 9 miles. You will go down to a traffic light in the village with a Cumberland Farms on the right. Turn left at the light onto Routes 4 and 32, heading north. Go about a mile north and pass Lynn's Country Cafe. Soon after this, make a right turn at a sign saying Boat Rides. You will see the lock house ahead. Proceed along the road to a parking lot.

On the side of the lot, find a tree with a birdhouse. Stand against this tree facing away from the birdhouse. Look in the direction of 220 degrees to spot a hole in the side. Inside this wood is where your box resides!
