Find your way to the Michigan Fisheries Visitor Center north of Petoskey in Oden on the northside of US-31. The railcar, visitor center and parking lot are visible from US-31. This is a wonderful stop for little letterboxers. The hatchery is free of charge and offers tours as well as an interpretive center and self guided hiking. Be sure to bring dimes to feed the fish and, if possible, take time to visit the viewing chamber.
Begin your search by following the paved path to the right of the visitor center. A sign directs you toward the "Big Fish Pond" (.3 mile). After you find the Big Fish Pond go over the bridge and follow the paved path marked "Nature Trail". The next bridge is a short distance ahead. Leave the trail on the right side of the trail, down 3 steps just in front of the second bridge. Head toward a group of trees approximately 20 paces from the base of the steps. Find what you search for at the base of the first cedar tree.
