The Port Bolivar Lighthouse was built in 1872 and guided mariners for 61 years until retiring in 1933. Its exterior used to be black and white striped, but now covered with rust, it is almost a uniform black. In 1947 the Lighthouse was sold to a private bidder for $5,500. The Lighthouse was seen on TV screens after the drama "My Sweet Charlie." Among the stars were actress Patty Duke and actor Al Freeman, Jr. The Lighthouse is still privately owned, and not available to the public. You will still be able to get a great look at it. It is only about a half mile from the Port Bolivar Ferry landing. (On your left-north)

Directions:

There are really two ways to get there. You can "Mapquest" this Address(706 Hwy 87, Port Bolivar,TX 77650). This is a motel's address very close to the ferry landing. Or just use a map and take the back roads though Anahuac. (I prefer this way, but I don't want to get any Letter Boxers lost by giving you those directions.)

The other way is from Houston to Galveston:

Take I-45 South to Galveston. Exit Harborside, go right (north). Take Harborside all the way till you reach Ferry Rd. Take a left and take Ferry Road till you come to the Ferry landing. The Ferry is free and is only about a 15-minute ride across the bay. (THIS ALL DEPENDS - IF THERE IS A WAIT FOR THE FERRY, THIS COULD MEAN MINUTES OR HOURS). Sorry, you will have to figure this out by yourself.

The Port Bolivar Lighthouse Letterbox is hidden at the parking/rest stop area for the Ferry on the Bolivar side. Once you get off the Ferry from Galveston, the parking area is immediately to the right (south).
