PenGwen asked me to adopt all of her LA and OC boxes. The first always has a damaged logbook due to a nearby sprinkler, the second finally disappeared in 2020, the third I did my best, even replaced a stolen stamp, but between vandalism/decay of the monument (that has since been removed), and geo-thrashers, it's no longer a viable location.

These 3 boxes at CSULB (Cal. State University, Long Beach) in Los Angeles County, were planted on 4/17/01. We highly recommend visits to these boxes during the weekend and on holidays when students are not about. Please notify us if the boxes are missing. Things to see in the area are the Japanese Garden near the dorms, the Pyramid on Atherton and the old Rancho at Bixby Hill on Palo Verde Ave., then head to Belmont Shore for shopping and eats.

#1: Catching Some Sun In The Quad

Alive as of 11/9/21, over 20 years old!
From the Bell Tower near the Student Store, walk down the 101 steps to lower campus (passing the metal sculpture that looks like a flower opening). At the bottom, turn east and walk 6 paces to the first full cement patio block past the flower bed planter. Continue east, 29 2/3 cement squares, passing the fire hydrant at 25 cement squares, then passing the free standing brick wall. Go to the flower planter corner on the other side of the brick wall. In the angle formed by the corner, under the interior lip of the planter awaits your box. Have a sit down and act casual as you reach in. After stamping in please seal the ziplocs and screw the lid tight as this area gets regular watering and the log books have been getting damp.

Note: This letterbox takes some special care to retrieve properly. If you aren't really slick it will go missing again. Please try to retrieve on the weekend or during the evening and if there are students about then come back another time.
From the Dandelion Fountain near the circular drive that goes to upper campus and the pedestrian bridge to lower campus, begin walking down the pedestrian bridge. At the bottom you will see a large exclamation point sculpture and note that the path breaks into 3 parts.
Take the route along the far left fork of the path for 108 paces to a narrow ramp on the left side of the path. Go up the ramp into the parking lot. Continue on a course of 280 degrees and proceed for 113 paces to the end of the lot. Face the concrete bridge like structure. You will see a flower bed just beyond a metal fence railing. Move to the far left side (S.W.) of this parking area and stand on the lower rung of the fence railing. Your quest ends here in the 18" long concrete slit above your head about 6' 6" high. Reach in the corner of the slit or if you have a walking stick or a coat hanger with you, use it to drag out the box. Proceed with caution and be aware that there may be students about.
This is still one of our favorite hiding spots. (2021 note: agreed! I thought this would last forever, but sadly it’s gone.)

7/30/11 Lee carved a new stamp (same image) to replace the one stolen by a geocacher

From the blue pyramid head south toward General Custer's number. Find the pile of huge lumber. Behind the vertical column on the southwest side look into the crevice where the down slanting lumber bundle meets the horizontal base. The box is behind a wooden wedge. The wedge and box are near and below the three adjoined metal cones on a rod. Be careful of splinters.
Only 1 in 5 letterboxers have been able to find this one.
