***Please see also Volcanic Pillows, placed by Mookie.

Stark's Knob is a very short, steep walk that gives a beautiful view of the Hudson River, the Northumberland Dam and beyond. It only takes a few minutes to climb. There is a historical marker on top and an information kiosk at the bottom in the parking lot.

From Schuylerville,go north from the traffic light at the junction of State Routes 4 and 29 (the corner has a Cumberland Farms). If you have headed east on 29,this will make it a left turn. Head about a mile north on Route 4 until you see Stark's Knob Road on your left. Park at the lot on the bottom and walk up the dirt road, going past the spot leading to a clearing on your right. Look up the road and you will see the blue sign marked "Trail." Go to the sign and follow the trail up the tree-lined hill. It is steep but short; you should reach the top in a couple of minutes. Once you get to the top you can enjoy the panoramic view below, but careful about going further, as there is a steep precipice below and beyond. The trail ends a few paces further at the cliffside.

To find the letterbox, start at the flagpole.
Go back down the trail about 30 paces
Look left: The box is
at the base of a double-trunked tree under a stone pile.
Please bring your own ink pad, and replace and cover the box well when you are finished.
