****EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THIS PARK AFTER HURRICANE IKE INDICATES THIS BOX IS LIKELY TO BE MISSING*******

We have been letter boxing for a few months now, but this is our first plant. The Letterbox is located in Sea Wolf Park in Galveston, Texas. My kids love this ship(SS Selma), they think it is an old pirate ship.

The SS Selma is a World War 1-era concrete ship(yes, I said concrete). She is a landmark and one of the most unusual sights in Galveston. The Selma was built in Mobile, Alabama around 1919 with only 11 like her. She had a short life, with only a few runs to Tampico for oil. After needs for repairs, she was dry docked. The Army engineers at last declared that the SS Selma was unseaworthly and could not be repaired. The Selma was towed to the site in Galveston Bay near Pelican Island and sunk on March 9, 1922, in a cut intended for her grave. At the time the ship was parked high and dry, but has settled and now is in at a least 8 to 10 feet of water. There is also all kinds of legends about people living on it; including hermits and even a German spy during WW2. The SS Selma can be seen very well from Sea Wolf Park. But, if you ever get a chance to view her up close from a boat, do it, it is worth the trip.

Directions: To Sea Wolf Park in Galveston: Take I-45 south to Galveston Island. Exit Harborside or continue till 45 becomes Broadway, and take a left on 51st St. Go over the drawbridge to Pelican Island, and pass the Texas A&M campus(or stop the Sea Aggie LB is there). Continue to in the end of the Island, to your left will be the entrance to Sea Wolf Park. ($5.00 parking fee) There a other fees to tour the USS Cavalla & USS Stewart.

Clues: After paying the $5.oo parking fee, drive to the 1st parking row.(closest to the entrance) Try to find a spot about midway down the row. Once parked and out of your car, face the USS Cavalla. To your right is a small gravel driveway. Start walking down the drive, there should be a basketball court to you left. The drive will turn to your right. Once you turn right, there on your left will be a large black light pole with a white base. Behind the base is a single bush/tree. The LB is under some brush at the base of the bush, in a small camo box. Please be sure to put the rubber band back on the box or replace it if needed. Re hide well! Happy Hunting!
