Four Friends

Sargent Town Forest, Pittsfield

NOTE: This is the seventeenth year that our letter box has been hidden in the forest, and it is still there waiting for you to find it!

Once upon a time, in the place now known as the Sargent Town Forest, there was a group of fairies who called this woodland their home. They still live in the forest, but are very shy. Sometimes if you are in the forest and listen carefully, you might hear them whisper when the wind blows or hear their wings flutter as they fly among the trees.

A troll named Mugwort also lives in the forest, and he is not very nice to the fairies. Mugwort is also a very clever troll, because he can change into a giant bolder whenever he wishes. Doing this is very helpful when he wants to take a long nap, or especially when he wants to hide in the forest and capture the unknowing fairy folk.

To protect themselves and their friends from Mugwort, the faeries gathered special stones. The fairies put a spell on these stones so that anyone who carries one of these stones will be invisible to Mugwort, and can walk in the forest without his knowing it. When you find the letterbox, you'll find some of these magic stones. Be sure to take one with you to hide from Mugwort. And if you pass a boulder, remember -- you may be walking by the sleeping troll.

How to find the letterbox

Travel to Sargent Town Forest, which is located on Route 107 (Catamount Road) in Pittsfield, New Hampshire.

Near the entrance, you will see the stone trough that was used over 100 years ago so horses could stop and drink as they and their riders rode to and from Pittsfield Village. Just to the left of the trough is the entrance and the path for the forest nature trail. There may be some trail maps in the mailbox that is located as the start of the trail.

Walk down the path, and you will soon notice that it branches in two directions. Take the path that brings you past nature markers #4, #5 and #6, then go up the hill past markers #7 and #8. Be sure to be quiet as you pass the boulders! You never know if one of them might be Mugwort.

Keep walking up the hill and you see another boulder on the right. Continue along the path to marker #10, a rock with ferns growing on it. No, the letterbox isn't here, but you are getting closer. Continue on the path along the curve, and follow until you come to an intersection on the trail.

Turn right onto the Link Trail. Walk carefully, as the hill is steep to the right.

Now you are almost there! Some people think that the number 13 is unlucky, but for you it will be just the opposite. Look for Lucky #13, then look straight ahead for a boulder behind it and to the right (hint: it has a tree growing on it!). Walk quietly up to the boulder, then look for the box behind it. Did you find it? Once you have left you message in the notebook, take one of the magical rocks with you, so that you will always be protected from Mugwort.

To take the longer way back to the parking lot (about another half hour or so of hiking), continue on the Link Trail to the Upper Loop Trail and follow the map and the blazes back to the parking lot. For the shorter route back, just turn right onto the trail and follow the signs back to the parking lot. Feel free to sign into the notebook in the green mailbox, too, if you haven't done so already. The caretakers of the forest like to see who has visited.

The GPS coordinates of the letterbox are:

43° 17.561 N

71° 18.231 W

It takes about 20-30 minutes to find the letterbox with kids (not including the walk back). The path is easy for kids, even young ones, but not good for strollers. Don't forget the bug repellent. Check out the other Sargent Town Forest letterbox while you're here!
