UPDATE MAY 2012 ****These boxes are currently MISSING. We will update the clues when we get them replaced. Thanks, and we are sorry for the inconvenience.

Difficulty level: easy, but trail is not stroller friendly
Duration: 30 - 40 minute walk, round trip, plus some time for stamping

The story idea for this box, and the stamp designs belong to our children, with just a little help from mom and dad. : ) We decided to plant them in our very favorite park to camp in, and hope that you enjoy this wonderful place as well! Please email us with any problems with the boxes, as we will otherwise only be checking them when we are in the park camping.

Starting Point: Ludington State Park is located 8 miles north of Ludington on Lakeshore Dr. and M-116. From Ludington, take Lakeshore Dr. north for 8 miles. Lakeshore Dr. becomes M-116, follow M-116 to the end to the state park entrance.

The Happy Camper had just finished setting up his campsite and had gone to explore the beautiful state park grounds. He returned, excited to try to catch the big one at Hamlin Dam, only to find his fishing gear MISSING! Follow the clues to reclaim his gear, and enjoy a wonderful day of fishing!

CLUES:
*You will need to pay a user fee/admission at the main gate unless you have a state sticker for the current year.

Once you've entered at the main gate, take the first drive on the RIGHT, heading eastward. You will pass "Pines" Campground on your left, then you will come to "Cedar". You will park in the Cedar lot; there is parking available at the camp store.

Proceed back towards the main road, but look for the paved bike/walking path just before it. Head westward on the paved path.

Marker 17 is what you seek!

Begin on this trail.

Up and down,
Up and down,
Up and stop just before the red arrow

Look at that tree with fingers for roots on the left! Just before "Mr. Finger Roots" take the old mossy "path". Follow it to the tall stump (about 13 paces in).

Your first piece of gear can be found in the end of the log lying next to the tall stump.

Go back to the trail and continue along the path.

Up, up, up you go!

What's this? Another red arrow? Ignore it! Otherwise, you'll go the wrong way!

Admire the green carpet along your left.

Then, it's through the pillars.

Soon, down below, on your left, you'll see a "giant wood crystal" (as my son describes it) jutting straight out of the ground.

Head down toward the base (watch your footing - it's a bit steep here). Search the east side of the base, in the hollow log. (Please be careful here - as there are campers nearby - please be discreet.)

You're almost ready to go fishing!

Go back up the trail and continue down along the path.

Admire the view from the ridge.

Down a little dip, then through the grassy corridor.

Another red arrow? This time, heed it's direction!

The sign confirms this trail is indeed on a ridge!

Make the curve around.

Stop in the sand trap!

50 degrees - look! Is that a little mouse door in that tree?

What you seek can be found at the end of the fallen log, just to the left.

Now you're ready to go fishing!

BUT WAIT!

Bonus Box Directions:
40 degrees, 16 paces (32 steps!) to a rotting fallen log. You will find the thief in the log lying parallel to the trail behind you, look near it's feet!

To return, go back up to the trail, and return the way you came. Don't forget to enjoy the beautiful park! There are also other boxes hidden in this park by other placers, if you'd like to make a wonderful day of letterboxing!
