*Replaced 8/31/08, same park, new hiding place

John Wayne made his fame in Hollywood, but it was in Newport Beach that he made his home for the last 13 years of his life. He passed away in 1979, but if he was still alive today, he would have turned 100 on May 26th, 2007. Happy birthday, Duke.

To find this letterbox, you need to go to the park at the intersection of [street where Wayne built a tennis club] and [street where Wayne's favorite steakhouse is]. Find the plaque with a stone arch behind it. Face the plaque and look past the plaque. About twenty feet straight ahead, you'll see a bush. Okay, you'll see lots of bushes, but this one stands above the rest. You need to get to this bush. To do so, head down the paved path to your east, then turn left down the mulch-covered path that leads to a bench. Halfway to the bench, look to your left and you'll see a clear path down the hill to the big bush. Under the east side of the bush are two large boulders. In the cleft between them, covered by smaller rocks, is where you'll find The Duke.

While you're here, don't forget to stop and enjoy the view that gives this park its name! And as always, please re-seal and re-hide the box well. Thanks!
