Take I-40 East out of ABQ thru the mountain pass. Take the Hwy 14 Exit South. Go about 5 minutes. You will pull off the road at the first right hand (west) pull off/gravel parking area. There is a sign just before the pull-off that says Tunnel Canyon, but I always miss it when we go out there, so you have to look hard! If you see a sign for Otero Canyon you have gone too far, turn around and Tunnel Canyon is not far back.
Park in the gravel parking area. You will see an old National Forest information sign that has no info on it! Take the trail (the only one) out of the parking area going west. A few steps along the path you have th option of breaking off to the right/north into an open area surrounded by junipers.
Your goal is under second clump of trees on the left hand side a little ways up the hill. Watch out for glass bottles. Apparently, someone thinks it is a good spot for that. Next time we go out there we are taking gloves and a bag for trash.
The box is behind the trunk of a juniper under rocks, twigs, and fallen juniper needles.
You might also watch out for little cactuses.
Take some time to hike along the path and down into the tunnel that goes under the road (being very careful that there is no chance of flash flood!!!!!) You can get some good sounds going down there!
The trail joins up with Otero Canyon down Hwy 14, but it is a very long trail.
