Yost Park
9535 Bowdoin Way, Edmonds
You can sometimes hear traffic from Main Street in this forested ravine park but otherwise it seems tucked away from the nearby city. I totally guesstimated on the mileage and elevation gain. There is a steep section down and back up from the ravine but otherwise nothing too strenuous.
The city lists the address as Bowdoin Street but we found it right off Walnut Street, from Ninth Avenue. The park also offers tennis courts, a small playground and an outdoor swimming pool (open summer only). It's also not far from Edmonds' waterfront parks (Marina Beach, Brackett's Landing) if you're looking for a daytrip.
Only some trails are marked so I advise printing out a map in advance from
www.ci.edmonds.wa.us/Discovery_programs_website/Yost_Park.html
If you have a map, you'll notice these can be found in any order as they don't really progress along one trail. I numbered them by the OK to the best stamp IMHO. So if you don't mind an anticlimatic finish, by all means find No. 1 last. (Note for parents: Finding the third box last lets you use ending at the playground as a nice carrot.)
Park at the main parking lot near the pool. Some parts of the trail can be muddy after rain so wear appropriate shoes. Also, we noticed mosquitoes already in early spring so I imagine by summer folks might want bug repellent.

Box #1: Walk along the road (posted for handicap or service vehicles only) as it curves around and heads toward the pool. Follow the trail (handily marked with a sign saying "Trail") down the hill. (This is the Sword Fern Trail on the map.) Once you're down the hill, you'll see a bench on the right. Turn right here.
Follow this trail (Shell Creek on the map) over a total of four bridges and a lengthy segment of boardwalk. After all that, keep a lookout for a bench on the right -- a handy place to sit and stamp. There will also be three shortened sentinels to the right just pass the bench. Go between the second and third of these and at the bottom of the third, slightly behind it in a hole under logs is the first bug you seek.
If you want to continue for a longer hike, you can make a loop back on the Highline Trail (there is quite a bit of traffic noise from Main Street, but if you want more exercise, go for it). For those without a map, take a left at the next intersection, go over a bridge, and turn left at the crossroads (following the trail to the right marked "trail" leads to another loop).
If you just want the next box, the shortest route is to go back the way you came until you're back at the first intersection with the bench.

Box #2:
If you took the high route, follow it all the way around (ignoring side trails) until you come out onto a closed road. Just a short way down, you'll see a trail to the right (I think the map says West Trail but it could also be Weir). Follow it.
If you went back to the intersection, this time go to the left and cross two bridges. Take the first trail to the left. If you reach the real road (Main Street), you've gone too far.
The trail is a bit overgrown but it's short. When you reach the end (and if you have kids, have played in the water), cross the creek as best you can and then navigate over the mud on the opposite bank. Go up the informal trail until you see a giant nurse stump with its progeny growing up out of the top. At its base, go around the side and count 3 root tendrils. Hidden in a hole under logs and leaves is No. 2.
Head back up the trail and turn right to return to the intersection. Go up the hill (c'mon, it's not that bad) to the parking lot.

Box #3:
This box is in another area of the park so walk on the entrance road past the pool and playground over to the tennis courts. Behind the tennis court, find a bench and go up the trail next to it. When you come to a T, turn right. Circle around and step over a log on a trail to your left (if you go straight and come to a steep downhill, you've gone too far. And yes, you can get to this section from the first box if you instead turned right at that "Trail" sign intersection and then followed a bunch of rights. And had a map.) Anyway, start heading downhill. When you see a multiple-branch large shrub/small tree on your right and a two-trunk log on your right, start counting paces. After 9 to 10 paces (2 steps each), you'll see four trees to the right with ivy climbing up them. Next to the tree in the middle there is a long fallen log.
Walk across this log almost to the end (it can be slippery, but hey, you don't have far to fall). When you reach the tree, there is a huckleberry to your right. Look down to your left. Under small logs and ivy, tucked next to the tree, is the final box in the Dragonfly Series.
Continue down the trail and it takes you back to the playground (and beyond that, the parking lot). Have fun!
