Rand History Library Letterbox

This box is hidden in the Rand History Library. In 2000 the Rand Elementary School was closed and turned over to the community. We have been trying to make it an asset to the community. My mother has an interest in preserving the rich history of this area which is slowly being lost. This is why she has started a history library located in the community center. The area of Rand used to be owned by a very wealthy man who had salt mines in the area. Route 60 was the main route of trade and travel in pioneering days -- it goes from Norfolk, VA all the way to Los Angeles, CA. It travels through WV from White Sulfur Springs to Kenova where it crosses the Ohio River into Kentucky. This area is rich with history and has plenty to see. There are several letterboxes in the Fayetteville area, Anstead, Hawks Nest and Cathedral Falls, all which are along Route 60.

From Charleston:
Travel to Rand by I-64 East or Route 60 East, taking Exit 96 (Midland Trail exit). You will enter a four-lane road and go through a controlled intersection. Stay in the far right lane, it is a through lane. You will come to the Malden-Rand exit that takes you under the railroad tracks. At the T intersection take a left and follow Old Route 60 through Malden, past the oreo-cow pasture, Carver Career Center, Chemical Valley Lumber and 7-11. There will be a big stone building at the next road -- Harvard Avenue. Turn right onto this road and at the next intersection (Harvard and Church) the Rand Community Center will be on your left.

From Beckley:
Travel to Rand by I-64 West toward Charleston, and take Exit 96 after crossing the Charles "Chuck" Yeager bridge. You will want to be in the left lane when the exit divides into two lanes and carefully go around the hairpin curve that takes you past Tudor's and Gino's. You will merge onto a four-lane and head toward the controlled intersection. Stay in the far right lane, it is a through lane. You will come to the Malden-Rand exit that takes you under the railroad tracks. At the T intersection take a left and follow Old Route 60 through Malden, past the orea cow pasture, Carver Career Center, Chemical Valley Lumber and 7-11. There will be a big stone building at the next road -- Harvard Avenue. Turn right onto this road and at the next intersection (Harvard and Church) the Rand Community Center will be on your left.

From Route 19:
You can pick up Route 60 West at Hico near Route 19. Stay on Rt. 60 and take the Belle-Rand exit. You will have a yield as you come around the exit curve as you go under the railroad tracks. You will turn right at the T intersection. You will go past the DuPont Plant on your left and the Marmet Locks and Dam construction. Continue on old Route 60 (Midland Trail) until you pass DuPont Middle School on your left. The first street after the school is Marshall Avenue, but you want the next street, just a block down Rt. 60, Harvard Avenue where there is a stone building on the corner. Turn left onto Harvard and at the next intersection (Harvard and Church) the Rand Community Center will be on your left.

You can park on the sidewalk, or if the parking lot fence is open you can park there.

At the far left side of the building there is a door near the corner closest to the parking lot. That is the door to the library. Go inside. When you can define genealogy, you will have found what you seek!

You can always ask the librarian (my mother and co-conspirator in planting this box) for assistance!

You will need to bring your own pen and ink pad.
