This strange creature, you will probably never cross paths with. He is scared of his own shadow. His name is Stewart. If you happen to see him, the next second you won’t. While he is pointing at you and trying to recall if he knows you, in those 2 seconds of thought or a blink, he is gone….disappeared....see ya! That fast too!!

Stewart checks the forest and stacks up any cut up logs, and moves fallen twigs and branches off to the side of the trail. He works hard trying to tidy up the forest. You too can keep the forest neat and don’t litter. With your help, there will be less work for Stewart to do.

*Please bring bug spray.* *Check yourself for ticks after hike*
*See-ums and No-See-ums can be thick when in the season.*

Directions:

Go to the Beaver Brook Assoc. web site to view their trail map of this area, and other areas. The wildlife, trees and plants are beautiful around these trails. Please help keep it that way. Link: http://www.beaverbrook.org

To the Beaver Brook: Jeff Smith Trail Head, Hollis. Proctor Hill Rd. (Rt. 130). The North, pond side of the road,

From the intersection in downtown Hollis where the traffic lights are, follow Rt. 130 west (Proctor Hill Rd.), for approx. 2.2 mi. The trail head parking will be on the right side of the road next to a pond. As you drive into the very small dirt parking lot which is big enough for only one or two cars, you will see a chain going across the trail entrance, covered by a piece of white pipe with orange tape on it. There is more parking across the street at the other trail head entrance to the Jeff Smith Trail. If you enter Brookline you have gone too far.

Clues:
This is a short and easy hike. Starting at the trail head, you will begin your journey following the Jeff Smith Trail. Soon after you start, you will see areas in the forest where trees have been cut/ cleared. Follow the blue blaze trail.

Soon you will pass a very large oak tree on your left, by itself in a small clearing.

Just ahead you will be approaching a small pond/ marsh area. The trail starts to get narrow at this area too.

You will approach a narrow footbridge. It is stronger than it looks. There are logs under it.

After you have crossed the footbridge, look for the first tree with a blue rectangle trail blaze on it. Notice the big triangular rock on the left of the trails that is facing you. Look to the left side of this rock, between the small pine tree and this rock. “Monster Marsh” will be hiding there.

Please dry if needed and seal it to keep it safe and dry. Re-hide well and cover with logs, pine needles and leaves.
